Pet food

Choosing a healthy diet for you pet is a balancing act. But adding more meat in pursuit of higher protein content can also mean too much fat, calories and minerals, which can cause health problems such as weight gain or even obesity. Wellness is one brand that has taken that balance into account.
Natural products such as Wellness® Core™ for Cats provide this type of grain-free, protein-enriched diet with balanced levels of minerals to promote a healthy urinary tract.
Grain-free cat food should be high in lean-quality meats, and contain Omega 3 fatty acids like those found in flaxseed and salmon oil for feline skin and coat health.

Natural dog products such as Wellness® Core™ for Dogs are grain-free and packed with lean, high-quality proteins. Core also contains glucosamine and chondroitin to promote bone and joint health, plus nutrient-rich greens and botanicals such as kale, broccoli, spinach and parsley.

U.S. consumers spend more than $11 billion a year on cat and dog food, according to the Pet Food Institute. And pet food manufacturers compete for these dollars by trying to make their products stand out among the many types of dry, moist, and semi-moist foods available. Pet food packaging carries such descriptive words as "senior," "premium," "super-premium," "gourmet," and "natural." These terms, however, have no standard definition or regulatory meaning. But other terms do have specific meanings, and pet foods, which are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration's Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM), must carry certain information on their labels. Consumers can be confident that their pets are eating a nutritionally sound food if they understand the full significance of these labels.

The following items can be toxic foods for pets, so please be cautious when you are eating or using these items it could be life or death for your pet. These are avocados (fruit, pit, and plant); chocolate can cause seizures; onions destroy red blood cells and can cause anemia, weakness, and breathing difficulty; tomatoes can cause tremors and heart arrhythmias; nutemeg; caffeine (from coffee, coffee grounds, tea, or tea bags) stimulates the central nervous and cardiac systems, and can cause vomiting, restlessness, heart palpitations; macadamia nuts can cause weakness, muscle tremor and paralysis; ham and bacon contain too much fat and too much salt, and can cause pancreatitis; raw liver or too much cooked liver (three servings a week) can lead to vitamin A toxicity; wild mushrooms can cause abdominal pain, drooling, liver damage; grains should not be given in large amounts or make up a large part of a pet's diet, but rice is generally safe in small amounts; dairy products are high in fat, which can cause pancreatitis, gas and diarrhea but a small amount of non-fat, plain yogurt is usually safe.

Remember that a pet’s health depends greatly on the nutritional value of its food. A pet is only as healthy as the food that it eats, in many respects. The food you buy for your pet should meet its nutritional needs as best as possible, whether it is dry or moist. Unfortunately when it comes to pet food you get what you pay for. Store brands and generics tend to be made with cheaper ingredients and lots of fillers. They’ll feed your pet, but they may not be the best choices for it. The more expensive brands like Science Diet and Eukanuba which advertise that they are “specially formulated” really, to a certain extent, are. They will have higher quality ingredients and are better suited to meet your pet’s needs.

Many pet owners prepare their pet food at home. By preparing your pet food at home you can save up to 80% and it's easy; making pet food at home is probably a lot less time-consuming than you may have thought. With hundreds of websites offering free pet food recipes online, it's now easier than ever to make your own pet food. While preparing food for your pet does not need salt added to their diet as the natural salt in the food is enough for them. It's a good idea to always add a grain, such as Kibble, wheat germ, cooked oatmeal or whole wheat bread to meat dinners. For dogs use 75% carbohydrate foods (grains and vegetables) to 25% meat; for cats use half carbohydrate foods to half meat.
You will find, once you begin making your own pet foods, that it is really relatively simple and you will save some money as well. Remember that all pet foods should be served at room temperature; don't serve food cold from the refrigerator nor hot from the stove.
Homemade pet food should take a ridiculously small amount of your time. As a general guide meats should be raw and vegetables must be finely chopped in a food processor or by a hand grater.
When it comes time for feeding, it is important that you let your dogs and cats eat as much as they want at the time of feeding. Once their body becomes nutritionally satiated, they will cut their food intake, sometimes by half the amount, and go on a maintenance diet. Incidentally, you should know that cats should be fed three times a day, while an adult dog needs only one meal a day.
To get started, find a good book with pet food recipes and use it to start preparing simple meals. You can also get free recipes from many websites online.

Balance is key to healthy pet nutrition. Pet food makers who add extreme levels of protein and fat are barking up the wrong tree. Consumers should look for products like Wellness Core, with the optimum balance of protein, fat, calories and minerals, to keep their pets happy and healthy.
